Shantang Street in SuzhouSuzhou is an ancient city that has always been proud as one of the best water towns in China. And the scenic Shantang Street (山塘老街) was built in the reign of Baoli Emperor of the Tang Dynasty. In 825 AD, when the great Chinese poet Bai Juyi (白居易, 772 – 846) was at an official post in Suzhou, he discovered that the terrain near Tiger Hill was in pretty bad shape during a trip on a sedan, the river was stuck by mud that water transportation was so difficult.
Family Qiao's CompoundThe Qiao Family Courtyard is another masterpiece of traditional civil architecture in North China. It lies at Qiaojiapu Village, 54 km south of Taiyuan. It was the residential house of the well-know financier Qiao Zhiyong of Qing Dynasty, also called Zai Zhong Tang. First built in the period of Qianlong Emperor of Qing Dynasty, renovated and expanded later, this compound has been turned into a magnificent complex with the unique character of traditional architecture.
Shuhe Ancient Town, near LijiangShuhe is about 4km northwest of Lijiang Old Town, and feels like Lijiang did ten years ago, before it became excessively touristy. The streets are lined with shops and restaurants, all built of rocks from the surrounding mountains. These buildings also house the owner’s families, transforming it from a theme park like Lijiang, into a working town.
Xiyue TempleXiyue Temple is the biggest one among others in the Chinese Five Mountains, which occupies area of 119,880 square metres, and is called the first temple of the Five Mountains. This temple is in axial symmetry, which is only under the level of royal sacrifice, and is so magnificent that is considered as the reduction of the Forbidden City in Beijing.
