As the "First Hydrological Station in Ancient Times" preserved intact and safe today, the Baiheliang (White Crane Ridge) has recorded the Yangtze water level data of 72 low-flow years during over 1200 years from the first year of Guangde's reign in the Tang Dynasty till early this century. The inscriptions and carvings that have been discovered are 165 paragraphs with about 30,000 characters. Among them, there are 18 carved fishes, which are used as water gauge to record data about low water and foretell the farming results. The practice of carving fishes as a gauge in ancient times is very similar to the modern principle of hydrological observation. According to the underwater site protection plan of "Zero-pressure Vessel", the Baiheliang will be screened with a huge "Zero-pressure Vessel"to form an "underwater museum". Tourists will be able to get in the museum through two underwater channels on the bank and circle around the ridge, enjoying the inscriptions and carvings through the sightseeing windows underwater. |
