Changchun is a beautiful city endowed with cultural atmosphere. Approved by the Ministry of Culture of China, Changchun Municipal People’s Government and the National Guiding Committee for Urban Sculpture Construction began to hold the annual Changchun International Sculpture Exhibition from 1997. Over the past nine exhibitions, Changchun has accumulated 439 pieces of sculptures made by 395 well-known sculptors from 212 countries around the world.

Changchun World Sculpture Park was built in 2003. Nestled in the southern part of Renmin Street, it covers 92 beautifully landscaped hectares. The combination of western gardening theory and the modern landscaping concept and the harmony of man and nature make the park full of special verves and miens. An 11-hectare lake also adds extra nimbus to the park. As an independent project, the park was awarded with its special achievements at the 3rd National Exhibition of Urban Sculpture Construction. The great white column of stone, Friendship, Peace and Spring, made by Ye Yushan, Pan He, Cheng Yunxian, Wang Keqing and Cao Chunsheng, 29.5 meters tall, won the award of “Outstanding Sculpture” at the 3rd National Exhibition of Urban Sculpture Construction.

The sculptures here represent different cultures such as Eskimo Culture, Maya Culture, Maori Culture, Indian Culture and Eastern Culture, covers from realism, abstract expressionism, to modernism or post modernism and fully illustrates the unique feature of the park, namely, a sculpture park of the world, making it of great value and widespread influence around the world.

Inside the park, there is a new-style multifunctional art gallery which covers 12600 square meters. Some one hundred sculptures made by the well-known sculptors at home and abroad are displayed there, and more are expected to be collected from the entries of the 10th National Art Exhibition. In 2004, The Exhibition of the Entries for the 10th National Art Exhibition, The Thousand Year Culture of Peru-Pottery Sculpture Exhibition, The Exhibition of the Exceptional Sculptures of the National Environment Protection Competition for Teenagers and The 3rd National Urban Sculpture Construction Achievement Exhibition-A Review of Changchun’s Ten-year Sculpture Construction were hosted here at the art gallery.
