In the old town of Xitang, people who live there are not rich, so no newer modern houses have been built there. That's maybe one of the reasons why the old constructions are preserved as a whole almost without damage. In those archaic houses, besides the culture and value of the houses themselves, there are also displays of cultural relics or woodcarvings or eaves tiles collected by the house owner. To this day there are exhibitions of the ancient rare books of the owners passed down from generation to generation or rubbings from a stone inscription of a famous calligrapher.

On the roofs of some old houses in Xitang, the grass is about one chi (about 13 inches) tall. It is said that the spirit of the former owner of the house joins with the grass, making it flourish and blessing the peace and permanence of the house as well as the prosperity of the entire town.

Xitang

Xitang
Xitang
Xitang is only 90km away from Shanghai, because the convenient transport, no mater by bus or by train from Shanghai you can reach there very fast. It is a small, mysterious and typical water township in southern China with over a thousand years of history. There are nine rivers twine through the township, and over one hundred ancient bridges connect the whole township. Evening and early morning in Xintang are the most beautiful moments, they are comely, unadorned and natural so you'd better stay one night in Xitang. Especially in the drizzling and misty days, the entire township is smothered in mist, which will bring you a sense of mystery. The sunset, the small boats, the clear water, the riverside lights in the evening and the water alleys, all of these bring you to an earthly paradise. If you have plan for lodging in this town there are many hotels for you to choose, and their prices are so just. On the other hand, don't forget to taste the local delicious snack food here and the freshwater fishes, the lake crabs and shrimps.
