Vairocana means light all over. The statues in the cave are evident embodiment of the characteristics of Buddha sculpture art in the Tang Dynasty. They have plump faces, pendulous ears and perfect shape, looking serene, gentle and genial. The Grand Vairocana Buddha sitting in the middle of the niche is the largest statue in the Longmen Grottos. It is 17.14 meters tall with round shape, elegant semblance and fluid lines in clothes. Her lips are slightly upturned and her head a little bit lowered, a slight smile makes her look like a sagacious and benign middle-aged woman whom you would respect but not fear.
